Parliament is a people-centered institution - Kadaga

“We do relate to the population and we have fought their battles."

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has expressed disappointment over claims that parliament is no longer a people-centered institution.

Kadaga has expressed this sentiment during a multi denominational thanksgiving service that has been held at parliament as part of activities to mark parliament week.

The prayers have been led by Rev. Father Phillip Balikuddembe the parliament Catholic Chaplain, Canon Christine Shimanya, the Parliament Anglican chaplain, in addition to Latiff Sebaggala, the Imam of Parliament.

In her remarks, the Speaker Kadaga has highlighted some of the work that has been conducted by parliament especially in the recovery of public funds that had been misused by government entities in addition to passing laws to improve on the livelihoods of Ugandans.

"We do relate to the population and we have fought their battles," she said.

"We have fought their battles here in the COSASE committee and recovered billions of shillings for the people of Uganda".

In her sermon, Canon Shimanya has criticized leaders for failing to fight against corruption in the country, noting that it has now pervaded into other sectors like education and the church.

"In Uganda people are not building houses, they are building estates. Where do you get that money? Members of Parliament and ministers, where are you getting this money? You are stealing from government."
