Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has “congratulated” the Iranian government on the recent relaxation of sanctions by the West which has enabled the national carrier of the Persian state to overhaul its fleet.

Kadaga made the statement earlier today during a meeting at parliament with new Iranian ambassador to Uganda, Sayed Mortez Mortazavi.

“I want to interest you on the issue of sanctions. For the first time in many years, your national carrier has bought new planes,” Kadaga said.

Iran which has for over a decade been under Western sanctions over its controversial nuclear program was last year allowed by the US government to purchase a fleet of planes from Airbus and Boeing.

In June last year, Iran reached a deal with Boeing to purchase 100 planes at over $2b – a deal which experts hope will help Iran’s national carrier replace its ageing fleet.

Earlier, Mortazawi, speaking through an interpreter, had made a case for deepening of economic cooperation between Uganda and Iran through effecting a string of economic related protocols between the two countries.

“In this regard, we need your support and that of this honourable House,” Morazawi said. Uganda has a fully-fledged embassy in Iran with the Persian state annually giving scholarships to Ugandan students.
