President Yoweri Museveni, has ordered security operatives in Kasese to stop arresting innocent people, in connection to the recent Kasese district clashes between the police and Rwenzururu kingdom royal guards, which left over 100 people dead.

During a meeting with the President on Wednesday, Kasese district leaders told Museveni that some security operatives were extorting money between sh300, 000 and sh1m from the locals, to remove them off the list of people to be arrested in line with the clashes.

However, briefing journalists at Parliament, one of the Kasese leaders, MP Robert Centenary (Kasese Municipality) who met the President, said that Museveni had directed that no more leaders are arrested without thorough investigations.

The President has also directed Kasese district local and national leaders such as MPs, not to interfere with the court process, and allow the courts do their work without tempering with the investigations.

"He told us that the matter is before court and that we should let the court do its work, without interference," Centenary said.

The directive comes at a time, when Charles Wesley Mumbere, the king of Rwenzururu kingdom and others, are facing court charges, regarding the Kasese clashes.

According to Centenary, during the meeting, they also agreed that in future, the government engages local leaders for peaceful negotiations, to avoid clashes.
