Prof. Ssentamu said that the graduation date cannot be set before the date of re-opening is agreed upon by the council and the visitation committee.

Makerere University graduation which was earlier set for January 2017, still hangs in balance as consultative meetings regarding the re-opening of the university are still on-going.

According to Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu, all the university activities are set and regulated by the university council which is the supreme governing body.

In an interview with New Vision, Prof. Ssentamu said that the graduation date cannot be set before the date of re-opening is agreed upon by the council and the visitation committee.

"It is the work of the university council to consult and come up with the university running program which is put into practice by the management and other staff members, but as for now, we ought to wait from the council," he added.

University Council chairperson Eng. Wana-Etyem said that university activities are done chronologically, first being the reopening of which date is yet to be announced and there graduation date will also be set.

Eng. Wana-Etyem said that the council is about to conclude all necessary consultative meetings in preparation for the reopening of the university.

Eng. Wana-Etyem refuted media speculation about the university opening date as January 2, adding all consultative meetings have to first be exhausted.

Makerere was closed on November 1 to guarantee safety of persons and property, due to a long standoff between lecturers and management over non-payment of incentive arrears of over sh54.8b.
