Uganda, China in new bilateral understanding

The Vice President expressed Uganda’s gratitude to China’s support towards key national interest projects like Karuma and Isimba power dams

Uganda and China are to enter a new arrangement of bilateral understanding to upturn China supported projects and programs in Uganda to further enhance cooperation between the two countries.

This was disclosed during a meeting between Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and the new Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zheng Zhu Qiang who called on the Vice President at his office in Kampala.

During the meeting, the Vice President expressed Uganda's gratitude to China's support towards key national interest projects like Karuma and Isimba power dams, Entebbe expressway and renovation of Entebbe airport among others which he said are indicators of strong friendship between the two countries.

He said that the new Ambassador was coming to Uganda at the time when the two countries are diversifying their engagements into other areas of tourism, cultural and people to people interaction to promote more grass root interactions adding that his coming to Uganda will facilitate the process.

Ambassador Zheng said the new projects will include cooperation in areas of education, IT, local Government, culture and people to people interaction and appreciated Vice President's contribution to the promotion of relations between the two countries.

He also appreciated Uganda's support to China on various China interests at international fora and pledged China support to Uganda especially in areas of peace and security in the region and the continent.

Ambassador Zheng who earlier worked as head of African Affairs and also in Zimbabwe and Botswana replaces Ambassador Zao Yali who retired from Chinese diplomatic services about five months ago.
