The Uganda rugby sevens announced their arrival in the Sevens circuit with bravery albeit their lack of experience hindered them.

Unlucky for the Cranes their debut on the HSCB sevens circuit was a baptism of fire against the much experienced and stronger South Africans.

The schooling by the Blitzbokke was so fast and the 14 minutes of a match didn't help our cause either. Make no mistakes Uganda's negatives may have outweighed the positives in just one weekend of competition but there is no shame in stuttering on ones
opening statement.

Hope for the future

In a weekend that was punctuated by Uganda falling on the losing end of all but one match against Japan, meant that the euphoric moments were few and far between but nonetheless they existed. As the saying goes good things come in small packages in this case in small doses.

The team had some breathtaking passage of play against the USA that was a sight for sore eyes as was Phillip Wokorach's try against the same opposition. It did not yield anything but it gave us a snippet of what Uganda's sevens could bring to this international melting pot of
rugby talent.

In the lanky frame of Phillip Wokorach lies a bundle of skill, talent and vision and all this shone through during the tournament.

Wokorach's kicking game was at its best, whenever an opportunity presented itself, he took it. Lawrence Ssebuliba meanwhile was a breath of fresh air with his darting runs down the field. His try against Japan will surely not be forgotten any time soon.

Cape calling

The team has an invitational entry into the Cape Town circuit where they were pooled against Wales, Scotland and Samoa.

They will be in unchartered territory against Wales but have played against Scotland and Samoa in Dubai where both teams beat us. We have an opportunity to right these wrongs considering our performances against both teams were impressive although not good enough.
