There were no children in Mumbere's palace - police

Kaweesi wondered whether guards in State House and Buganda’s palaces like Mengo and Banda go with their children in there.

Police has dismissed reports by Kasese parliamentarians that there were children killed in the attack on the Rwenzururu kingdom palace last month.

The army and police attacked the Rwenzururu palace and clashed with the kingdom royal guards before evacuating the king, Charles Wesley Mumbere. During the clash, 64 people are reported to have died, among them 16 policemen.

Police spokesperson Felix Kaweesi wondered; "those MPs are claiming there were children in the palace, how come Mumbere's children and wife were not in the palace? Those people had planned it all."

Kaweesi wondered whether guards in State House and Buganda's palaces like Mengo and Banda go with their children in there.

"The local leaders are simply trying to make a case out of nothing," Kaweesi told New Vision while responding to claims by Kasese leaders that children who were in the palace had gone missing.

Several Kasese MPs including the leader of opposition, Winnie Kiiza and Kasese municipality MP, Robert Centenary, have severally claimed that there were children in the palace during the attack but their whereabouts were unknown.

Kaweesi lamented that the 16 policemen who lost their lives to the Obusinga royal guards were also human beings like others, adding that they do not regret attacking the palace. Kaweesi also clarified that the official number of people who died was 64, and not more as claimed by the Kasese leaders.

Kaweesi's statement came after government officials were reported to have given conflicting figures on the number of people who died in the attack with some putting it at over 100.
