KAMPALA - The Police have arrested the acting Tablique leader, Sheikh Yahaya Mwanje, in connection with the murder of Maj. Sheikh Mohammed Kiggundu on Saturday morning in Kampala.

Kiggundu, a senior Muslim cleric, and his body guard Sgt. Steven Mukasa, were shot dead by unknown assailants on Mengo-Masanafu road off the northern bypass a city suburb at around 6:15am local time, according to the accounts of some residents in the area.

Kiggundu and Mukasa were felled by bullets fired by assassins travelling on motorcycles, the same modus operandi used by the attackers who have killed top Muslim leaders in the past five years.

Addressing a news conference at the police headquarters in Naguru, the force's spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, said Mwanje was arrested on Sunday morning and detained at a police facility.

However, Kaweesi declined to divulge information about where Mwanje was arrested and where he is currently detained. Some sources indicated that he was arrested at one of the mosques in Busaabala, another Kampala suburb, after the morning prayers on Sunday.

"He is in our custody. And that is the most important thing now. We will update you as and when we get more suspects," Kaweesi said.

The police spokesperson explained that Mwanje was arrested on account of the 'utterances he made' against some Muslim leaders, including Kiggundu before he was gunned down.
