Works for the upgrading of roads in Makerere University started on Monday with the main gate set to be shifted to a lane heading to the law school.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) engineers explained that shifting the main gate is aimed at easing traffic flow within the university.
The works will include seven other roads which include: Pool Road , Mary Stuart Road , University Road and West Road among others.
Justus Akankwasa, KCCA acting director, engineering and technical services explained that the upgrade comes as compensation for part of the university land which is to be affected during the widening of Makerere Hill Road.
"Instead of giving cash to the university management, KCCA preferred to compensate the university in form of upgrading their roads which will give the university a new face," he said.
The construction works will cost sh6.9b.
During the ground breaking, Makerere university management officials openly told KCCA engineers that there will be no compromise on quality, and equally requested them to start the works with shifting of the university main gate to minimise interruptions by the time the university is re-opened.
