Aloe vera juice is no modern fad!

Aloe vera has been used for thousands of years in the treatment of various ailments. Today, it is a frequent ingredient in cosmetic products, dietary supplements, foods, and drinks.

But, despite its widespread presence, aloe vera and its products such as aloe vera juice have not been studied very much.

The studies were mostly limited to its role in skin healing and as a digestive aid. Nevertheless, its use is widespread, and the claims frequently speak for this versatile herb.

Prevents and helps cure diabetes

Aloe vera has been traditionally used in the Americas and Arabian Peninsula in the treatment of diabetes. A study on 5000 heart disease patients given a preparation containing aloe vera and isabgol found that patients suffering from diabetes experienced the most benefits.

Out of the 177 diabetes sufferers, almost all experienced normalization of blood glucose levels after 2 months of administration despite the fact that they did not take any hypoglycemic agents.

The researchers concluded that this benefit mainly comes from the high fibre content of the aloe vera preparation.

Fights cancer

A study published in Natural Immunity was conducted on patients with metastatic cancer to see if administration of pineal indole melatonin (MLT) in combination with aloe vera would activate anticancer immunity.

The group of patients given the MLT and aloe combination had statistically better outcomes with 12 of 24 experiencing stabilization in their disease compared to only 7 of 26 patients given only melatonin.

Furthermore, the percentage of patients surviving one year later was greater in the aloe vera group. This study suggests that aloe vera probably has some compounds with cancer-fighting properties.

Reduces inflammation and relieves joint pain

Because Aloe Vera offers strong anti-inflammatory benefits, drinking juice from this herb may offer help in improving a dull complexion.

But, its anti-inflammatory effects can offer help pain relief. The isolated C-glycosyl chromone from aloe gel was found to be the main active anti-inflammatory compound from this herb.

Furthermore, the peptides bradykinesia found in aloe vera are believed to break down bradykinin, a pain-inducing inflammatory substance in the body.

This might explain why aloe vera is a popular herbal remedy for arthritis, a joint disease whose primary symptoms are pain and inflammation.

Boosts your immune system

Drinking Aloe vera juice may also help boost your immune system. According to a study published in International Immunopharmacology, polysaccharides found in the gel of the Aloe vera plant offer, among other things, immune strengthening and anti-tumour activities. This study mainly found that the immune system boosting effects of aloe vera had exhibited anti-tumour activity.

Aloe vera juice is becoming an increasingly popular drink and for good reasons also. The health benefits of drinking aloe vera juice are varied, ranging from heart-protection to pain relief.

However, more studies are needed to know how exactly the different compound found in the leaves of the aloe vera plant benefit health.
