Batwa's education struggle amidst marginalisation

They knew nothing about education, health, clothing and the life outside the forest.

IN WEDNESDAY'S MWALIMU

Batwa are considered one of the most isolated minorities and marginalised people in the world.

In Uganda, they were forest dwellers till 1991 when they were evicted by Uganda Wildlife Authority from Bwindi, Mgahinga and Echuya forests to create National Parks.

They remained homeless and visiting one of the areas in Kisoro district where they are settled leaves one in tears. This later had their toll on their gradual embracing of education too.

They knew nothing about education, health, clothing and the life outside the forest.  Upon their eviction, they were treated as outcasts. The communities were so hostile and were discriminated against not only in the communities but also in schools. How are they surviving, owning to the fact that only 0.5% of their entire has secondary level education graduates? See details in Mwalimu on Wednesday this week. But New Vision at only sh2,000.
