Makubuya Memorial Cup returns

This year’s competition is expected to draw over 24 teams.

Defending champions Walukuba West A will face an uphill task of defending this year's Lawrence Makubuya memorial football tournament that kicks off this Sunday at various locations in Jinja town .

The Walukuba-based side has nurtured players like Uganda Cranes' Geoffrey Massa, Andy Mwesigwa, Moses Oloya, the late Abby Dhaira and others.

This time round, they are up against  Jinja Veterans ,Mpumudde , CCT, Kimaka, Dam Waters , Boda boda, Walukuba West B , Njeru FC , Mafubira FC , FC Ten , Central Tiger FC and three-time champions St Jude FC .

This year's competition is expected to draw over 24 teams, according to the tournament coordinator Abdul-Akim Lubwama.

"We are having quite a number of entrants who have shown interest in registering for the event but we shall teams on a first-come first-serve basis," he said.

 Teams will be grouped into four and they will play a one-day gala at Main street playground, St Jude and Kakindu stadium to get the quarter finalists.

This annual football competition, organized in memory of former Zone Ten and Jinja district football administrators for the last 18 years, has often been highly recognized in the region. Most lower league teams use it to prepare for their campaigns.

Last year's competition attracted such impressive sides as Aseka Aseke FC.

The tournament, sponsored by former FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa, will run for one month, with the final held at Main street playground.
