Teso 'serial conman' arrested in Serere

Police in Serere district have arrested a serial crook, said to have conned a number of nurses out of large sums of money.

The 32-year-old suspected serial conman was named as Omax Ojeke, a resident of Bukedea district.

He has reportedly been moving from district to district, mostly in health centers purporting to be an official from the health ministry under the scholarships desk.

The suspect has particularly been targeting female nurses, promising that he would get them scholarships for further studies.

That way, he would dupe his unwitting targets.

Ronald Akankwasa, part of the intelligence team at Serere Central Police Station, said their records show that complaints from four women.

The victims' statements indicate that they were conned by the same man - Ojeke. He reportedly pulled the same move on each one of them - promising link to further studies, marriage, etc.

According to Sam Lumago, Serere district CID officer, Ojeke got as much as sh8m through his scheme in the districts o Bukedea, Amuria and Serere.

He was arrested when one of the nurses attached to Serere health centre IV reported a similar case. This time, the promise - in exchange for sh1.5m - was that the conman would connect her to his brother for a job opportunity in Moroto.

Once in police custody, Ojeke denied all the claims labeled against him.

One victim said she was forced to get a loan in order to raise the money required by the conman.

Ojeke was remanded to Serere government prisons and is to appear in court on November 4 to answer charges connected to his alleged offence.
