Kabarole medics arrested over embezzlement and drug theft

Police in Fort Portal municipality has arrested two health workers for allegedly embezzling money meant for primary health care activities and stealing government drugs.

The two health workers who were arrested over the weekend are suspected to have diverted over 4.6 million shillings advanced to Kidubuli health center III and stealing drugs which they sell to private clinics.

The two were arrested during an operation conducted by the drug and monitoring unit from state house during their routine monitoring of government health facilities in the district.

The two suspects were identified as Nasuna Lillian the in charge of the health center and James Mugume a worker at the health center.

The Kabarole Resident district commissioner Steven Asiimwe expressed high concern over the continued corruption within government institutions and vowed to arrest health workers who abuse their offices.

Asiimwe said that the two were handed over to the police and were charged with neglect of duty, theft and embezzlement of government funds.

"The two officials failed to account for the money advanced to the health center for primary health care and the drug supplies which they have been receiving from government they were arrested and handed over to police to face charges of embezzlement, drug theft and neglect of duty," Asiimwe said.

Asiimwe decried the rate at which government officials are embezzling money meant for service delivery to the local people in the district.

"Am very much concerned that local people are not receiving adequate services because money is being embezzled by the officials which is very bad and it must stop," added Asiimwe.
