Police warns against crime-abetting phone apps

Police says apps like 'Kawunyemu Alert' help criminals evade police.

Police in Kampala has warned people that have started abusing the use of technology by inventing phone applications that mobilize criminals to evade police operations like the 'Kawunyemu Alert'.

Emilian Kayima, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said they have learnt about an application called Kawunyemu Alert designed by Ugandans to alert one another about police's drink-and-drive check points and how to dodge them.

He said this act not only puts the lives of Ugandans at risk, but also strains police work in protecting their lives.

He added that police is also determined to take the same path of technological advancement to apprehend whoever is involved in cyber crime.

"Yes we've seen technological inventions trying to beat the operations of the police, with the Kawunyemu Operation. And they think that they can evade being arrested for driving while drunk," said Kayima.

"I think they are prisoners of their own inventions. So technology is there, and I think they are giving more money to those who are inventing this technology. If you are drunk and you are on the phone, trying to evade, we can guarantee that you will crash and more will die."
