We need more police officers - Minister Odongo

“It’s my responsibility to work with Parliament to raise funds for Police operations."

Internal affairs minister Gen. Jeje Odongo says the Police is facing a problem of manpower.

He says currently the ratio of police to citizens stands at 1:900, adding that they plan to up the number of police to have the ratio at 1:500.

Speaking during a familiarization tour of the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala on Monda, Odongo said the Police also faces the challenge of insufficient resources.

He, however, said the ministry is working with concerned government bodies and Parliament to get more funding of the institution.

“It’s my responsibility to work with Parliament to raise funds for Police operations,” said Odongo.

The minister applauded the Police for their continued efforts in keeping law and order, saying statistics show that 49% of Ugandans are confident with police operations.

Police chief Gen. Kale Kayihura recently said the Police have about 45,000 police officers. “We have more than 42,000 police constables and over 2,000 cadets.”

During the tour, Odongo, flanked by  internal affairs state minister Mario Obiga Kania, also visited different Police projects such the recently launched housing units’ site at Naguru, Kampala. He also toured the construction of police units in Nateete.
