Makerere University student Daphnia Tumwebaze, 21, was yesterday evening crowned Miss Social media 2016-2017.

The event took place at Golf Course hotel in Kampala. Although the event was poorly attended, it was filled with pomp and pageantry.

The theme for this year's competition was addressing maternal mortality in Uganda and the winner was given a cheque of sh4m.

Tumwebaze replaces Ruth Manuella Muyima, the 2015-2016 reigning beauty. "I hope the newly crowned miss social media will contribute better than I did towards addressing maternal mortality," said Muyima.

Tumwebaze, a social Science student floored other 10 competitors in the race. The 1st runner up was Latiffa Umuliisa, 21, and the 2nd runner up was Esther Madonna.

The competitors showcased different skills in poetry, singing, dancing, fashion, and public speaking.

Each contestant made a brief presentation on what she had to offer in terms of maternal health.
They were later asked different questions relating to maternal health, challenges and how to overcome them. The judges choose according to one's confidence and ability to answer those questions.

The guest of honour, Jane Ruth Aceng, the Minster for Health, hailed the organisers and participants in the event. She also said a very good number of youth do not know causes of maternal deaths.

"We need to pass out short, quick, easy understood messages about maternal health to youth, sexuality comprehensive education is also crucial," said Dr. Aceng
