Makerere University lecturers suspend strike

Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu, the Vice chancellor, said that this one month will give them a chance to make important negotiations with relevant stakeholders to come up with a lasting solution.

Makerere university lecturers under their umbrella Makerere university academic staff association (MUASA) suspended their sit-down strike that had seen all evening and weekend programs come to a halt.

This was reached during the meeting between the university management, council and MUASA. In this meeting, MUASA gave the university council ultimatum of one month to review the decision of cutting lecturers' allowances by 75% and come up with a solution.

This means that Kabaasa committee will again, in collaboration with the university Makerere University Lecturers suspend strike, give one Month Ultimatumcouncil draft a new decision that will be a lasting solution for the allowances. This is a committee that drafted the decision to introduce incentive in 2013.

Dr. Muhammad Kiggundu, the chairperson MUASA said that with this amicable agreement with the university management, a review will be done and in one month they will come up with a better decision.

 "We have reached an amicable resolution that this period of one month has a value to come with a recommendation that is much more guided. We have called off this strike effective now" he said.

"I am aware that some colleges were teaching but we urge lecturers who have not been teaching to resume and catch up with Day-class students" He said

Makerere University lecturers went on sit-down strike on September 5, protesting the decision by the university management to cut their allowances by 75%. This came after the university treasury went in deficit of over sh 39b.
