Nicholas Wankandya, a pupil at Home Darling primary school in Kaliro town council hanged himself with a rope because he was told to dig on Idd Adhuha.

Residents of Kirindi ward in Kaliro town council were sent into grief after a 13-year-old-boy committed suicide on Monday.

Nicholas Wankandya, a pupil at Home Darling primary school in Kaliro town council hanged himself with a rope because he was told to dig on Idd Adhuha.

Although the deceased belonged to the Anglican faith, he protested digging on Monday arguing it was a big day where he was meant to stay at home.

The primary five pupil together with his elder sister Christine Nairuba had gone along with their mother, Salama Kagoya to the garden which is located at another village in Kalitunsi ward still within Kaliro town council.

However, even when he went to the garden, Kagoya said Wankandya was not digging to her expectation and therefore, she asked the two to return home.

Instead, Wankandya went to Kaliro town and bought a rope which he used to hang himself onto a jackfruit tree.

The Kaliro district police CID officer Robert Asendu confirmed the development  saying the incident occurred 30 metres away from the garden where the deceased’s mother was tilling.

Much as the incident happened near Kagoya’s garden, she was not aware that her son had committed suicide until passersby saw his body hanging and sounded an alarm that attracted the mother who collapsed on seeing him dead.

According to Nairuba, Wankandya tricked her that he was going to use the rope to fetch firewood only to learn that he used it to kill himself.

Asendu said a postmortem was carried out and police handed over the body to its relatives for burial.

According to Erusania Batala, a resident, this was the second incident in four years after a similar one in Gadumire sub-county, Kaliro district when a boy hanged himself after his parents allegedly blocked him from going to a video hall.
