Tororo drunken man clobbers wife to death

The heavily sloshed man returns home, finds his wife and children preparing a meal and everything goes wrong.

A 46-year-old man in Tororo district returned home sloshed from a routine trip at a nearby bar and hit his hapless wife to death in front of their children.

Lawrence Majanga Oloo had staggered all the way back home to get money to clear his unsettled drinking bill. He would get the money from selling milk they had at home.

But when the drunken man got home, he found his wife and children preparing a meal for dinner. Nabwere Aidah, also 46, was pounding groundnuts using a local mortar and pestle.

She reportedly insisted that they had also planned to sell the very milk to buy cassava flour for food.

Majanga was enraged by his wife's seemingly defiant response.

Their first-born, Alfred Oloo, told police that it was at that moment that his heavily sloshed father lost his cool and chased after his sibling whom he wanted to punish for siding with their mother on the milk matter.

The younger child, Denis Owori, managed to scamper off.

Frustrated, Majanga then turned his rage onto his wife, snatching the pestle and hitting her several times with it on the head as their children looked on in disbelief. Nabwire dropped dead moments later.

This brutal episode unfolded in Nagongera town council.

The children alarmed neighbours who, upon rushing to the scene, found Nabwire dead.

Known to be a habitual drunkard, Majanga ‘sobered up' and sped off to the nearby Nagongera Police Post where he handed himself in after realizing the angry residents had wanted to attack him.

His children say he hardly provides for them as a family and often left all care-taking and provision responsibilities to their struggling mother. He reportedly has two wives.

The killer husband was later transferred to Tororo Central Police Station after residents threatened to mobilize themselves to attack the police post and get him.

Meanwhile, Sowali Kamulya, the Bukedi regional police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying they are investigating the case. The suspect faces murder charges.

Kamulya warned civilians against taking the law in their own hands and blamed such inspiration on excessive alcohol and substance abuse.
