BAGAMOYO - Christakis Fitidis braved two long days to finish fifth in the Oryx Energies Tanzania rally in Bagamoyo to keep the Ugandan flag flying high.

The 62-year-old driver was delighted with his performance, saying that he had met his target.

"I'm happy we achieved our target of finishing in the top five and further still we brought our car back safe with not cracks," he said..

"As Team Uganda captain, it's absurd that Jas Mangat and Duncan 'Kikankane' dropped out on Day One but I am happy that Uganda's flag remained represented to the last day."

The Construction Group-sponsored driver and and the MOIL-sponsored crew of Yasin Nasser are the only two Ugandan drivers that finished the two-day rally.

Mangat navigated by Joseph Kamya in a Mitsubishi Evo 10 and the Friends Bus Coach crew of Duncan Mubiru navigated by George Ssemakula all in Evo 10 dropped out on day one due to engine failure.

"The routes were a blend of rough and smooth but we had a strategy and plan to finish so we were cautious of whatever we could do," said Fitidis.

The two-day rally totaling to 520km had only 12 cars completing out of 26 crews that started the event.
