Renowned artist and founder of Women at Work International, Halima Namakula has advised young girls to desist from early sexual intercourse to prevent fistula.

During a Fistula awareness conference held at Kaunda ground in Gulu town on Wednesday Namakula empowered young girls and women of reproductive age in matters of reproductive health.
"Young girls who get pregnant are at a higher risk of getting fistula because their reproduction systems are not mature enough to handle the complications of childbirth," said Namakula.
She also said older women should always deliver from health facilities to avoid childbirth related complications that may lead to fistula.
"Statistics rank Uganda at number three in the world with 2,000 fistula cases registered every year," Namakula said.
Aber Sharon Lillian, an enrolled nurse at St. Mary's Hospital Lacor -in charge of the patients with fistula also explained how the condition is caused.
"Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) occurs during a prolonged obstructed labour…, she explained.
