Gunmen attack Rakai Police Station, suspect shot

Jun 23, 2016

Kalisizo Police had been silent about the incident

Gunfire rocked Kalisizo town council on Tuesday night for over 40 minutes as police engaged unknown gunmen, police authorities have confirmed.

The gunmen stormed Kalisizo Police Station few minutes to midnight in a tinted Toyota Premio car whose registration number was not recorded that night.

Kalisizo Police had been silent about the incident with the concerned officers declining to speak to the press.

Eyewitnesses said they were passing by, when the sound of gunfire forced them to take cover in the nearby trenches.

They said the gunmen opened fire as soon as their car reached the police station prompting several police officers to scatter.

However, they said, the officers also responded by firing at the car injuring one of the suspected attackers before they sped off.

Police followed them and continued shooting at the car which the attackers abandoned during the chase.

The rest of the occupants managed to escape leaving their injured colleague bleeding in the car.

Maxwell Ogwal, the Masaka Regional Police Commander (RPC), confirmed the incident.

He said that the injured suspect is currently admitted at Kiisa Medical Clinic in Kalisizo town under special Police watch.

The suspect has been identified as John Bosco Mulumba, a resident of Bulinda village in Kalisizo Town Council. He was shot in the stomach and both limbs.

He said that there are still a lot of questions for Mulumba to answer as far as the incident is concerned.

According to Ogwal, none of the officers was injured in the exchange adding that they engaged the attackers very fast.

He further refuted allegations that the attackers shot at police as allegedly witnessed by the residents. He added that they are investigating the incident to come up with a full report.

Following the recent attacks on police stations countrywide, Ogwal said that police is on high alert to counter similar armed attackers.

He further promised to deal with every armed cluster that intends to terrorise residents or attack police stations in the region.

Detectives told New Vision that they did not recover any guns from the car which was also abandoned near the medical facility.

They explained that they are still pursuing the suspects following possible clues and intelligence information.

However, Mulamba denied being one of the attackers and declined to divulge details of how he was involved in the incident.

Mulumba's mother Maxensia Nambajjo said her son's health is improving.

She said that her son is a law abiding citizen who has never engaged in any criminal activities.

She appealed to the Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura to intervene and offer treatment for her son.

Dr. Grace Kyasiima, the proprietor of the clinic, declined to reveal the state of the patient.

There is heavy deployment at Kiisa Medical Clinic which patients and caretakers are not comfortable with.

Caretakers said that police presence at the facility scares visitors who pay visits to their patients.
