Vipers stunned KCCA in a 2-0 win

By Isaac Manzi

After KCCA lost 2-0 to Vipers FC in the Uganda Cup first leg semi-final on Wednesday, vice-captain Joseph Ochaya sounded confident that they can overturn the deficit in the return leg.

“Football is football, we were just unlucky and we hope to put more efforts in the second leg though we shall be playing away. We played to our level best and in the first half of the game we had some absolute chances but we were unable to use them,”Ochaya said.

But Vipers showed intent right from the start, constantly attacking KCCA’s backline of Joseph Ochaya, Richard Ayiko, Saka Mpiima and Timothy Awany.

In the eighth minute, Vipers forward Erisa Ssekisambu drove the ball past KCCA FC goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan to open the scoring.

This forced KCCA coach Mike Mutebi to react by making instant substitutes at the start of the second half with Julius Poloto replacing Emmanuel Magembe while Godfrey Ssembatya came on for Hakim Ssenkumba.

This though did not stop Vipers to doubling the lead through Alfred Aleku in the 50th minute of the game.

”I cannot say that we have already qualified for the final, but to me, we have to play like we don’t have any goal and in football you cannot relax before the struggle ends. The second leg will be a tricky game because KCCA will come with too much pressure to score many goals” Vipers’ coach George Nsimbe stated.

KCCA will need to win 3-0 on Sunday if they are to reach the final for the third consecutive season.

Elsewhere, having won the first leg away, Arua side Onduparaka are now ready to eliminate Entebbe FC and reach a historic first Uganda Cup final.

The final will be played on June 18th at Nakivubo Stadium.
