The objective is to promote the local food stuffs

Farmers in Mukono central division have come up to promote the locally produced foodstuffs.

This was exhibited yesterday by Slow Food Uganda under their project the ‘Earth Markets' at the Mukono District grounds.

According to Peter Ssekaddde, the chairman of the Mukono central division farmers association and a member of Slow Food Uganda, the firm began in 2007 with its headquarters in Italy.

"Its objective is to promote the local food stuffs. We want the farmers to concentrate more on growing local food because as they grow and sell it people will then eat it in its natural form preventing the dangers that result from the genetically made food"  Ssekadde emphasized.

Miracle Mugabi, the national vice coordinator Slow Food youth network Uganda, said that farmers from Mukono and other neighboring districts bring their produce and seedlings to exhibit them at least twice a month and this is called "Earth markets."

Mugabi added that by doing this their products are marketed and they also sell them to get money. He urged farmers to join them to promote the natural food stuffs.

"Farmers bring food stuffs like cassava, potatoes , pumpkins, honey, termaline juice, passion tree plants, onion leaves, ebittoffeli, ebinyanya, ebitungulu and some animal  and chicken feed supplements" he added.

Harriet Nakanjako, one of the farmers who works with Bio-Power Clear Line Mode Industries in Mukono, said that through the Slow Food project earth markets, she has managed to get market for her products.

"People get my telephone number and then call me and ask for my produce. I also sell them from here and go back with some money. I am so grateful for Slow Food Uganda" she said.
