Security tightened ahead of Martyrs' Day celebrations

Police are maintaining their strong presence to ensure that the celebrations are incident free.

Security is tight at Namugongo Basilica where the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations will be held on June 3.

Police are maintaining their strong presence to ensure that the celebrations are incident free. Worshippers have already started arriving at the venue.

Fr. Lazarus Kiggundu, the chairman of organizing committee said, thousands of pilgrims are expected to attend the celebrations.

 The bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana, Joseph Anthony Zziwa, will lead mass at the Basilica.

The Uganda Martyrs are a group of 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts, who were executed between 31 January 1885 and 27 January 1887. They were killed on orders of Mwanga II, the Kabaka (King) of Buganda.
