Segujja blamed colonialists for misleading Ugandans

A holiday makers' agriculture training module at an Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) model plantation at Ttakajjunge has been set up.

The food security and poverty eradication arrangement, the first of its kind in the country, is to be an ongoing one during school holidays, and is to be introduced in schools at a later stage.

According to the OWC coordinator for Mukono Municipality Maj. Moses Segujja, the idea is to set up a human resource reserve force for the programme, to ensure it does not lapse when the initial beneficiaries phase out due to old age.

"The young ones who are energetic and actually the consumers of the biggest percentage of the national production, almost practically produce nothing, and yet they need to be armed with skills to keep the fire burning' Segujja said.

He was on Sunday showing the youths drawn from Nabbaale sub-county and Mukono municipality, best practices for growing matooke at the OWC model garden set up two years ago.

Segujja blamed colonialists for misleading Ugandans by involving only certain regions in agricultural production, and recruiting people in other regions in services like the armed forces.

The youths appreciated Maj. Segujja's arrangement saying it is a good training intervention for getting them ready to become job creators rather than scrambling for the few competitive office jobs.

"We cannot all fit in the limited formal employment in both the private and public sectors, yet the land resource is readily available, and our peers should join the arrangement rather than opting to join political demonstrations which are unproductive", Joseph Mukasa from a Nabbaale sub-county youth group said.

Segujja gave the youths banana tubers for them to start their own gardens back at their homes.
