Winnie Nwagi draws crowds to Afrigo Band

May 02, 2016

She is a star on today's music scene, an industry littered with very many competitive musicians, and if she can attract such people to an evening, designed for the older generation, then she is doing fine.

The monthly Friday Night Live gig that features legendary band Afrigo gave regulars a skittering in the gut.

Last Friday saw Guvnor packed to rafters; one had to wiggle to their old time moves in the tiniest of spaces.

The night featured fat-rising diva Winnie Nwagi, a singer with a fine body that has got many a man waxing in whispers since her emergence on the music scene.

One can surmise it was her presence that cast that one beautiful speckle on the night, drawing as many partygoers as they could come.

But to her credit, she can really sing. As discovered on the night, it's not really about her body, it can also be about her music.

She is a star on today's music scene, an industry littered with very many competitive musicians, and if she can attract such people to an evening, designed for the older generation, then she is doing fine.

Before she took to stage, as is the norm, Afrigo, the hosts, had plunged into the night with several of their classics that don't really need mentioning here.

Nwagi, clad in white asymmetrical knee-length dress, took to stage at midnight, to loud cheers and began what had brought her there. Her fans also did what exactly had brought them there and waved up their smartphones to capture every moment. It is not so common on those nights to see many regulars strain to capture every moment on their smartphones.

She looked jaded, though, having performed at USPA gala held at the opposite end of town earlier on Friday evening.

Her songs like "Musaawo" and "Katono Katono" were sung before she did one Afrigo classic, as is the rule on this night to every featured artiste.

The song she did was "Nze Mpe Dembe". It delivered her powerful vocals to the fore, and proved her doubters it wasn't all about what they saw on her.

It's a danceable song what with the heavy instrumentation during the interludes, a point that drew Afrigo's Joanitah Kawalya from the crowd to the stage to show her how it was done on the dance floor in the hey days.

Nwagi was done after 30 minutes, and immediately stormed out of Guvnor to go catch her flight to UK where she had two performances over the weekend, London and Leeds.

She took to her twitter account to express delight on the Guvnor do. "Guvnor mashed mashed mashed.. Sold out. Packed body to body.. Thanks for the love.. Off to the airport."
