Most of the ranches are grappling with the acute water shortage

A severe water crisis has hit most government ranches in Kiryandongo district due to the prolonged drought in the district.

Most of the dams and unprotected wells which are the major sources of water in the area have dried up.

A 20 liter water jerrcan in Nyamutende Cell, in ranch no. 20 and 21 now goes for shillings 1500.

Most of the ranches are grappling with the acute water shortage.

Micheal Nyukuri, chairman Nyamulembe landless community said the crisis is impacting negatively on the community.

Nyukuri said residents have to trek over 10kms to access water from the neigbhouring areas, forcing women to spend nights at the watering point. Residents start battling for water at 4am.

Okanga Nicholas, chairman ranch no.21 said his area has the lowest water access rates with 1210 people depending on dirty and stagnant water for domestic use.
