Kira residents petition UNRA over dust

Residents along Kira-Kasangati road have petitioned Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to find alternatives ways of reducing dust on that stretch.

The residents further complained that the dust has become unbearable and most of the people who had set up businesses in the area have migrated to other places.

Micheal Musoke a resident of the area said that they have already talked to UNRA officials to at least set up humps that will help to reduce on the speeding motorists.

"As Residents of the area most of our businesses have become stalled because most people fear to use these route due to dust. We have talked to UNRA and they promised to help us to resolve that issue immediately," he said.

UNRA regional manager Eng. Jimmy Adwek said that 10km Kira-Kasangati road is under the routine Mechanized Maintenance project that has life span of three years.

Other roads under the project include Matuga-Buloba (17km), Nambole-Namanve and Mukono (11km) and Najjanankumbi-Busabala road. He said the 59Km stretch murram roads is under Sh10b project that is undertaken by Abubaker technical services.

He said that UNRA is engaging the services of the contractor, Abubaker Technical Services to work out modalities of watering the roads especially during the dry season.

"Under the contractual services we do not have any provision of watering the murram roads. But we are trying to find means of helping the residents of the area by watering the dust," he said.

Adwek said that they have already agreed with the contractor to humps in most of these roads in order to ensure that motorists do not over-speed on them.

He said the contractor has already finished two stages of leveling and grading the roads, and the next stage will be to open drainage.

He said that the roads are part of government programmes to De-congest the city and already designed are being made to tarmac the roads in the long-run.
