Man to serve 10 years for defilement

A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for defiling and impregnating and fathering a child with a 17-year-old disabled girl.

Gulu High court presided over by the resident judge, Lady Justice Margaret Mutonyi heard that John Oyuko, a resident of Atyang village ,in Lujorongole parish Lakwana sub-county, Gulu district defiled the girl who is crippled and has a hearing impairment , between April and May 2014.

The prosecution led by William Bayo told Court that Oyuko used to defile the girl ,from the bush and he was only caught by her parents ,after she started presenting signs of pregnancy.

Oyuko however pleaded guilty ,to the offence and asked court for leniency saying he is willing to marry the girl and take care of their one and a half year old child.

Mutonyi -in her ruling noted that although Oyuko's act showed -complete disrespect for women and persons with disability, he was repentant and didn't waste court's time and therefore handed him the 10 year jail term
