Five nominated for Gulu University guild presidency race

The nominations were held on Tuesday evening at the university’s main campus located at Laroo division in Gulu municipality.

 

Five candidates have been nominated to run for the Gulu University guild presidency for the coming academic year.

The nominations were held on Tuesday evening at the university's main campus located at Laroo division in Gulu municipality.

The guild election returning officer, Emma Namasa who declined to give further details said the nomination exercise was free and fair, and was carried out according to regulations governing the Uganda Guild Election guidelines.

Alex  Asiimwe, 27,  a third year student at the Faculty of Law was the first to get nominated at 10:00am and promised to initiate an empowered students' owned leadership, where the students themselves take the lead invdecision making on subject matters that may be viable to them.

He vowed to primarily focus at what he termed as ‘short-term' plans that he dreams should be achievable within a short period like a semester.

Among his short-time plans is stocking the varsity main library with textbooks relevant to the courses offered at the university, having accredited courses such as Law and pharmacy, which he said had not yet been done.

Namasa enlisted other four candidates also nominated as Robert Mukembo, a second year student of Medicine and Simon Ocan, a second year student pursuing a degree in Development Studies (DVS) on weekend program.

The other two nominated were Ronald Okumu, a second year student of Education and Benson Otim also a second year student at the Faculty of Law.

The guild electoral secretariat released the program for the candidate's campaigns and each of the candidates is busy canvassing for votes from the students' electorate.

Most of the candidates' manifestos are geared towards student's well-fare while at school, improvement on the academic outputs such quality results from hard-work, cooperation, peace and harmony among the students and having good developmental relations with the lecturers and the entire university staff body.
