Three fishermen from Serere district have drowned in Lake Kyoga after violent storms hit their boat during a fishing expedition.

The dead have been identified as Stephen Oonyu of Okulonyo, John Omalinga of Kateta and Kokas Oiro of Ocapa.

The incident occurred at about 3:00am Tuesday morning, according to James Ounya, the chairman of Iteso at Kikalaganya landing site in Nakasongola district.

The body of Kokas Oiro was recovered 12 hours after the accident while the search for his colleagues was still on by press time.

Ounya explained that people learnt of the three drowning this morning after their boat was seen floating on the waters.

"Upon reaching to the scene we got a flooting body of Oiro. Since the wind was strong we believe other bodies could have been blown to a distant place," Ounya said.

The deceased have been fishing while residing at Kikalaganya landing site found in Rwapanga sub-county in Nakasongola district.

"It's common for strong storms to cause death on Lake Kyoga and we have lost many of our colleagues to violent wind," Ounya a fisherman with experience expanding to twenty years said.
