Mbabazi supporter remanded over Ntungamo clashes

NRM supporters were beaten when they were accused of provoking Amama Mbabazi’s supporters

Apollo Asingwire a former LC5 councilor contestant for Ntungamo Sub County in the recent local council polls has been sent on remand by Ntungamo magistrate grade one court for reportedly having participated in the beating of NRM supporters.

The supporters were beaten when they were accused of provoking Amama Mbabazi's supporters who were in a motorcade returning from a campaign rally at Kyamate on 13th December last year.

The presiding magistrate, Richard Ndangwa remanded Asingwire on grounds that he refused to comply with court when he defied court sermons three times and therefore deserves to be remanded.

He was sent to Ntungamo Government Prison till 22nd, March 2016 when court will give a ruling on his bail application filed by the Go Forward lawyer in Ntungamo, Matsiko Onesmus.

This comes after the resident state attorney Jane Musiimenta objected the suspect's bail application saying that he had no substantial sureties and that he can flee the country.

In the same court, other 13 suspects who are also facing three charges of assault, causing grievous harm and malicious damage to the NRM supporters in Ntungamo also appeared before the court and their bail was extended to 12th April when the hearing of their case shall resume.

The 11 suspects that were arrested in Kampala following the Ntungamo clashes are; Turyamureeba Benon ( 40), Frank Kabali (50), Eriya Mayinja (27), Muteebi Jamil (64), George Ssebatindira (33), Asadu Ssemakula (33), Zephania Baattemyeto (43), Onzima Ramathan-Ramu (48), Nduga Rogers (35), Kasajja Abdallah (47) and Mugabe Lawrence King (aged 29).

Others who were also charged jointly with them from Ntungamo are; Boaz Kumwesiga a councilor representing Park ward and Amanya Sulait Kashaija, the chairman Ntungamo Taxi Owners and Drivers Cooperative Society.

Musiimenta also told court the investigations are complete.
