Government has earmarked sh212b in the 2016/2017 financial year to increase salaries for teachers, lecturers and non-teaching staff of public universities.

The ministry of finance budget director Kenneth Mugambe said, "Non-teaching staff have gone on strike on assumption that government will not increase their salaries as promised but I can tell part of the sh212b will be to increase their salaries."

He made the remarks on Friday on the sidelines of the pre-budget dialogue by the Civil Society Budget Advocacy Group at UMA Hall at Lugogo.

At the beginning of the week, Makerere University non-teaching staff laid down their tools demanding for pay rise as government had done for lecturers.

The non-teaching staff from public universities first went on strike last year in August after government had significantly increased salaries for lecturers and to stop the strike government promised they would increase their salaries in the 2016/17 financial year.
