Ugandan boxers out of Africa Olympic qualifiers

Uganda suffered a major setback in the Africa Olympics Boxing qualifiers as super heavyweight Mike Sekabembe and lightweight Sula Segawa lost out in Cameroon Saturday.

Segawa, who was primed as a better prospect, fell to Benbaziz of Algeria after sustaining a deep cut on the head while the Bombers team captain Sekabembe was out-pointed by a Nigeria opponent.

The pair join heavyweight Willy Kyakonye on the Ugandan casualty list. Kyakonye earlier on lost in the opening bouts on Friday.

The exit of the three boxers leaves Uganda with only three men still standing in the 10-day event that has drawn a record number of 272 boxers from 39 countries.

Bantamweight Atanus Mugerwa, light heavyweight Kenneth Katende and flyweight Ronald Serugo are still eyeing chances for the Rio 2016 Olympics Games.

As fate would have it, welterweight Muzamir Kakande missed the general weigh-in after arriving in the capital Yaounde on Friday.

The boxer was caught in trouble after being denied from boarding an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Cameroon at Entebbe International Airport on Tuesday.

He finally managed to jet out on Thursday but did not reach in time for the general weigh-in.
