Maracha headteacher fired over incompetence

At the beginning of the PTA meeting, parents said they were uncomfortable with Guma continuing to lead the school.

The school head of Olivu Primary School in Maracha district has been relieved of his duties over incompetence.

Masimino Guma was fired by the Maracha district education officer (DEO) during an emergency Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) general meeting held at the school.

Several parents had often raised concerns over the school chief, and they will have been relieved that Guma is no longer heading the institution.

DEO Flavia Osoa said firing him was necessary to pave way for effective service delivery within the northern Ugandan school.

At the beginning of the meeting, parents said they were uncomfortable with Guma continuing to lead the school.

Some feared for their children, saying Guma would mislead them, especially amid claims that he would - strangely - instruct pupils to hunt snakes, white tortoises, frogs and praying mantises.

A number of parents told the meeting of how their children had narrated to them that the headteacher had demonstrated to them how to capture snakes and selecting the parts needed by an unnamed German national operating in Kampala.

Guma is reportedly an agent of the said foreigner.

The move to sack him was unanimously welcomed, considering that the school's stakeholders had reportedly lost confidence in him.

On the allegations of animals, Guma said he had only mentioned the animals during a lesion as an example of dangerous things in the natural world.

He had served at the helm of the school for only six months after appointment by Maracha district local government.
