26 drivers register for FMU Premier Sprint

Mar 01, 2016

All proceeds from the sprint will go to organising the FMU annual awards and also part go to offsetting FIA debts worth sh70,131,800

The motorsport governing body (FMU) on Tuesday launched the FMU Premier Sprint due on Sunday at Busiika where rally drivers will test their new machines ahead of the Gorilla in the Mist rally in Kabale on the Easter weekend.

The 2.5km double track circuit at Busiika will see rally drivers battle it out for the Club Man Rally Championship and Sprint Championship.

FMU President Dusman Okee said that this sprint championship will be the toughest ever in the country because most of the drivers have imported powerful Mitsubishi EvoX and Subaru N14 cars that are too powerful.

"It is going to be the battle of Evos aka "Bisodde" and Subarus so fans come expecting fire and stay away from the track," Okee stated.

He added that all proceeds from the sprint will go to organising the FMU annual awards and also part go to offsetting the world body (FIA) debts worth sh70, 131,800 to restore Uganda in FIA's good books.

"We are starting from scratch and what we are going to do is to use the proceeds from this sprint and other FMU events to start offsetting these debts," Okee explained.

He also urged the corporate world to join and sponsor motorsport as another way of giving back to the community.

According to records FMU has a total debt of sh79.627m but the focus will be to settle that of the world governing body.

"I think, our local debts here in the country can be settled later but my focus will be on FIA debts so that we are in good books with our bosses," Okee added.

"You very well know the benefits of being fully in good records with FIA. We want to be considered for the annual FIA grants and that can only be possible if we are fully paid up," Okee explained.

Meanwhile 26 entries including Christakis Fitidis, Umaru Daudi, Edson Mungyereza, Ismail Ortega, Fred Wapamba and others have confirmed participation for the Sunday event.
