MPIGI – A driver of a Global Coaches bus has been arrested for causing the death of one his passengers due to what police called reckless driving.
The Friday night road accident along the Kampala-Masaka highway involving the bus and a lorry also left many other passengers injured.
Adam Barugahare was arrested and has since been charged with reckless driving and causing death and injuries to people.
According to local police, he was trying to overtake a long queue of vehicles on a rise at Katende, Mpigi.
When the careless driver saw another vehicle coming from the opposite direction, he tried to sneak back into the correct lane to avoid a head-on collision, said Ahamad Kimera, the Mpigi district commander.
But as Barugahare squeezed back into the queue, the front-left part of the bus hit hard into the rear of a sand-laden lorry.
One bus passenger seated in front died on spot while a number of others sustained injuries.
Police was called to the scene and they took the injured to Mulago and Nakasero hospitals for treatment.
Both ill-fated vehicles were towed to Mpigi Central Police Station while the bus driver was taken into police custody.
The Kampala-Masaka highway is notorious for road accidents every year.
