According to local police, he was trying to overtake a long queue of vehicles on a rise at Katende, Mpigi.

When the careless driver saw another vehicle coming from the opposite direction, he tried to sneak back into the correct lane to avoid a head-on collision, said Ahamad Kimera, the Mpigi district commander.

But as Barugahare squeezed back into the queue, the front-left part of the bus hit hard into the rear of a sand-laden lorry.

One bus passenger seated in front died on spot while a number of others sustained injuries.

Police was called to the scene and they took the injured to Mulago and Nakasero hospitals for treatment.

Both ill-fated vehicles were towed to Mpigi Central Police Station while the bus driver was taken into police custody.

The Kampala-Masaka highway is notorious for road accidents every year.
