Mabirizi expects victory with 53%

Asked if he will accept any ministerial post if he fails to win this election, Mabirizi said: “I contested to become a president, but not a minister.”

"When the tally is done, I hope to win by 53%," Independent presidential candidate Joseph Mabirizi told reporters after casting his ballot at Lufuka in Wakiso District.

Mabirizi was however; concerned that the delay in the delivery of election materials by the Electoral Commission would affect the turn up and the final results.

Voting materials for Lufuka, Bunamwaya, playground, where Mabirizi voted from were delivered at 9: 57am.

Asked if he will accept any ministerial post if he fails to win this election, Mabirizi said: "I contested to become a president, but not a minister."

Dressed in a short sleeved black stripped shirt, Mabirizi arrived at the polling station at 9:30am. He spent about 30 minutes waiting in his car, until he walked out to join the queue.

According to the National Voters Register compiled by the Electoral Commission, there are 15,277,198 registered voters, a significant increase from 13.9 million registered voters in 2011.

There are 8 contestants in the race. National Resistance Movement's flag bearer Yoweri Museveni is seeking a fifth term.

Other contenders are former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, Dr Kizza Besigye (Forum for Democratic Change), Dr Abed Bwanika (People's Development Party), Maj.Gen Benon Biraro (Farmers Party) and independent candidates, Maureen Kyalya and Venansius Baryamureeba.
