“Investigations have also led us to the slaughter houses in Kampala,” said a detective.

The Police’s Special Investigations Division (SID) is holding three suspects linked to several cattle thefts in the western region.

They were late last month and had been on the police’s wanted list but eluding arrest.

The men, whom police declined to name, are said to have been recruited to a racket behind cattle thefts for the past eight years. Most suspects are still at large.

Detectives told New Vision that all suspects are businessmen and own various homes in Wakiso district.

The police’s preliminary investigation findings referenced CRB 34/ 16 indicate that the suspects had allegedly “graduated” into one of the rackets of the most feared, ruthless and notorious criminals.

Without disclosing further details, the detective said the investigating officers had zeroed on other members of the racket, including the buyers of the stolen cattle.

“Investigations have also led us to the slaughter houses in Kampala,” said the detective.

The Greater Masaka region Police spokesperson Noah Serunjogi said the police had zeroed on the gangs/rackets behind cattle thefts in their region.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal affairs, Pamela Akunda said the existence of such gangs is worrying.

“These are some of the most notable groups that work as agents of insecurity in and around Kampala,” she said.

“They are well known for aggravated crimes and increased crime rates especially in the city.”
