Woman burnt with acid in critical condition

The couple had a quarrel because Aisha Kyomugisha had refused to pick her husband Imran Kaliisa’s calls

A twenty four old woman who was burnt with acid by her lover is in critical condition. Aisha Kyomugisha is currently admitted at Mulago hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where critically ill patients are admitted.

Kyomugisha's daughter Shamim Kemigisha who accidentally sustained acid burns is also admitted at the same unit.

Speaking to New Vision in an interview at Mulago, Kyomugisha's elder sister Edna Ayitamye said her condition keeps on deteriorating day by day and added that Kemigisha is also in bad state.

"My sister is not well because her face, arms and chest were all severely burnt" Ayitamye said.

Ayitamye said before the incident, the couple had a quarrel because Kyomugisha had refused to pick her husband Imran Kaliisa's calls.

"My sister tried to explain to Kaliisa why she did not pick his phone calls but her husband kept a deaf ear" Ayitamye said.

Kyomugisha a businesswoman operating in Container Village in downtown Kampala and her husband were staying together in Barracks zone, Makindye division and have a daughter.

Kyomugisha's friend Zam Nalumansi and a neighbour said at night the couple had a fight before the acid attack.

"Kyomugisha managed to get out of their house and ran to my house. Their daughter followed her, Kaliisa stormed my house and demanded that Kyomugisha picks her belongings and goes to her parents.

As Kyomugisha moved to their house to pick her belongings, Kaliisa reportedly poured acid, which was in a plastic cup on her face and her daughter was also affected" Nalumansi said.

Nalumansi also sustained acid burns on her legs as she tried to help her friend and she is undergoing treatment at Nsambya Hospital.

Residents helped Kyomugisha and poured fifteen jerrycans of cold water on the acid wounds immediately after the incident as first aid.

According to acid survivors association, 456 acid survivors are currently registered and out of this 12.4 percent are children.
