TRANSPARENCY International wants the next parliament to consider amending the Presidential Elections Act to have a clause which compels all presidential candidates to disclose their source of campaign funding.

This comes after one of the presidential Candidate Maureen Kyalya flew to the United Kingdom to look for funds to finance her presidential campaign which she suspended.

The Executive Director of Transparency International Peter Wandera says presidential candidates should not just get funding from anywhere.

“Some of them can fall back on their savings if they have, some on income generating activities. They can even reach out to wellwishers, donors or other governments” he said.

Wandera said there was cause for concern because candidates could be financed by some individuals with sinister motives of destabilizing the country.

How far should they go? What is the source of this money? If a person goes abroad for two months looking for money, shouldn’t the public know? There should be a clause of open disclosure” he added.
