Traders injured in accident

At least 18 market vendors from Lira, most of them women who were on their way from Orum Market in Otuke district were injured when their vehicle overturned in Alebtong district.

LIRA - At least 18 market vendors from Lira, most of them women who were on their way from Orum Market in Otuke district were injured when their vehicle overturned in Alebtong district.

Witnesses said the Fuso truck, registration number UAU 323W that was loaded with food stuff, merchandise and traders perched atop, fell off a small bridge and overturned as another vehicle apporached from the opposite direction.

The incident happened at Awali, Apala Sub County, Alebtong district at around 8pm.

Those injured and admitted to the female surgical ward include Sarah Apio, 25; Safia Okumu, Harriet Akello, 25, all residents of Kakoge ‘B’ village; Dorcus Aceng, 35 of Barogole, Beatrtice Akello, 25, of Jinja Camp, all in Ojwina Division.

Others are, Sharon Apio, 23, Collin Atim, 24, Jenifer Akello, 20, all of Lira Sub County.

Others are Kevin Akao, 27, Silvia Amongi, 48, Molly Akullo, 38, Kirombe East, and Eunice Ayo, 21, Adyel in Adyel Division,

Those admitted to the male surgical ward are John Okello, 50, resident of Orum in Otuke district, Calvin Omara, 35, Morris Odongo Jeje, 25, Innocent Owiny, 20, Moses Sam Okullo, 26, all residents of Lira town.

The name of the sixth person could not be obtained immediately.

Alebtong DPC Godfrey Bagonza blamed the driver of the truck for over speeding. He said 14 people were injured and taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital but this paper found 18 instead. He said five people sustained fractures and the rest were not serious.

The DPC said the vehicle was towed to Lira CPS and the driver is on the run and has not been identified. He said police will task the owner of the vehicle to produce the driver.

Most of the injured were complaining of chest pain.
