Uchumi Supermarkets has closed two branches in Uganda as part of re-organisation to stabilize the business.

Chief Executive, Dr. Julius Kipng’etich, said: “We have closed down Kabalagala and Matete branches in Uganda as part of the ongoing rationalization of the business in order to stop financial bleeding and get Uchumi Supermarkets back on its feet. All branches that are not performing will be closed down as part of the reorganization."

He added: “In Kenya, this exercise has resulted in the closure of Maua and Syokimau branches and will continue until we get the business back on the path to growth and profitability.”

The CEO further said that staff from the affected branches will not be absorbed as remaining branches have the required staff compliment to handle operations. Gulu, Garden City and Mbale branches continue with normal operations.
