President Yoweri Museveni announced the end of the Summit for the Adoption of the post-2015 Development Agenda at the United Nations by confidently saying “we have an agreement that is sensible and global”.

He described the session as ‘a miracle’ in which they have been able to agree after a long time.

“We are coming to the end of this important session. I describe it as a miracle. We have been able to agree after a long time. In the bible, there are two great laws; Love thy God with all your heart and love thy neighbor as you love yourself. It has been very difficult for the people of the world to love one another as they love themselves,” he said.

President Museveni who co-chaired the session with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and the Prime Minister of Denmark Lars Lokke Rasmussen for two consecutive days alongside holding various other bilateral meetings and chairing the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, declared to the summit that he was amazed at the success.

“Am actually amazed that at long last we have an agreement that is sensible and global. We are not only talking human rights, because people have always been talking about human rights…they talk about human rights without production, they talk about consumption without production. However, these Sustainable Development Goals.…they talk about industrialization, trade, infrastructure development and not philanthropies. They talk about development and growth and investment,” he said.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a new, universal set of goals, targets and indicators that UN member states will be expected to use to frame their agendas and political policies over the next 15 years.

The SDGs follow and expand on the millennium development goals (MDGs), which were agreed by governments in 2001 and are due to expire at the end of this year.

The closing session went into the early night and ended with President Museveni inviting delegates to watch a short documentary titled, “The Story You are Shaping”.

“Am very happy that after 50 years of watching selfishness in the world, now we are beginning to see common sense in the international for a. We are now coming to the end of this historic summit. I declare closed this high level plenary meeting of the 70th session of the General Assembly,” he said.

United Nations 69th General Assembly under the Presidency of Uganda led by Hon. Sam Kutesa successfully initiated the process to reform the United Nations security Council, the Sustainable Development Goals and on the onset, successfully steered the fight against ebola from an African problem to a global crisis thereby attracting an international response that quickly reversed the devastating spread of the disease.
