Rwanda coasted to the East Africa Military Games soccer title after Kenya and Uganda parted in a barren draw in a decisive match on Wednesday.

Uganda wasted as many chances as they created as Kenya held out in the last match of the regional event.

Kenya’s Ulinzi Stars marked out Simba FC’s danger man Robert Omunuk as Uganda pressed forward.

Martin Mugabi and Aggrey Kiirya wasted glorious oppoturnities that could have sealed the win for Uganda early. Kenya and Uganda who shared five points went to the match with each needing a win to grab the cup. But the sheer determination from each side forced the teams to share the spoils-handing the title to Rwanda who earlier wound up their account with seven points.

Ugandan international Musa Mudde said it was a spate of luck that decided the title.

“We should have won from the first whistle but luck was not on our side. We tried all our best. This is football,” said Mudde, who turns out for Bandari FC.

The win helped Rwanda to their third title in the annual event following their victory in handball and basketball. Hosts Uganda bagged victory in netball.

President Yoweri Museveni hosted the teams to a colourful dinner at Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo.

Minister of State for Defence JeJe Odongo, the Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Katumba Wamala and other top army brass in the region presided over the prize award ceremony.

The 11-day annual event that involved teams from Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Kenya is meant to foster the spirit of regional integration.
