Bishop Stuart University has signed the first ever cooperation agreement between an East African University and a German College.

Rev. Dr. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, the Bishop Ankole diocese says the agreement will boost the development of science disciplines in Uganda.

The two universities have signed two agreements; one in Germany and the second, which is the more recent one, has just been signed at the Bishop Stuart University main campus in Mbarara.

The signing ceremony was overseen by Bishop Mwesigwa who is the University Chancellor.

“This collaboration will boost the capacity of Bishop Stuart University, especially in developing the science based disciplines like Agriculture through staff and student exchanges and transfer of scientific information,” Bishop Mwesigwa said.

The five-year cooperation agreement is the first ever between a German college and a university in East Africa. Merseburg is located in West Germany in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, one of Germany’s sixteen states.

The agreement is a culmination of lobbying by Uganda’s honorary consul to Germany Prof. Dr. Nikolaus M. Schmidt, who doubles as a law professor at Merseburg College.

“We start with a time frame of five years. The cooperation includes students and professors/teachers exchange and research projects together,” said Prof. Schmidt.

“Universities in Germany have a lot of cooperation in Europe, US and many other places. So now it’s this is the first step to go side by side with Uganda to support and exchange ideas, research, and human resources,” he added.

Prof. Schmidt noted that an international symposium is set to be held at Bishop Stuart University where topics regarding the German law system and project management shall be discussed by professors from Merseburg College.
