MOSES Kibet over the weekend clocked 28 minutes 5.71 second to win the Italian track and field 10000m event at Ferrara. Linnet Chebet also managed a personal best in windy conditions, giving the pair a promising start to the year.

There was little competition for Kibet, the former World Junior Cross Country bronze medallist, as he broke off from his challengers at just over the half way mark to win in 28 minutes 5.71 seconds.

“There was little competition. I wanted to do a sub 28 minutes but this time is good for me and it’s promising. I will concentrate to see that it will yield results,” the runner told journalists after the race that took place on Saturday night.

Chebet was looking at trying to break the national record in the 10000m, but was nevertheless happy to set a new personal best of 33 minutes 25.32 seconds in her 10000m event.

The national record was set last year in Moscow by Juliet Chekwel at 32:57.02.

According to Flavio Pasqualato, who coordinated the trip, it was a good race for the duo and they were looking at improving in the next races.

However, Wilson Busienei and Boniface Kiprop, who were expected to make a comeback over the weekend did not race as the medical team ruled that they were not yet fit to start serious competition.
