Sailors tackle Entebbe waters

SAILORS will pray that wind blows over the lake as they tackle the last races of the Entebbe Sailing Club 50-year celebration competition today.

There will be up to 8 individual races with the 6 best results counting.

The races will take place at the Entebbe Bay starting at midday and can be watched from the shores of the lake, Botanical Gardens or local restaurants at the shore.

Experienced sailors Gordon Bell, Raint Bekema and Philip Bets and Andrew Boyd among others will be up against 2003 winner Jelmer van Lieshout on the last day of the contest.

Entebbe Sailing Club secretary Torsten Rode said that the action that started last week involved tackling the challenging and changing weather conditions of Lake Victoria.

Tricky weather conspired to spoil the first race of the competition last Saturday but good conditions the following day ensured action started in one of the biggest sailing events in the country.

Without wind on the lake on Saturday, sailors failed to advance and had to be rescued and towed to Entebbe after sunset.

The following day, the ‘fuel’ (wind) was available and Kim Bowerman from Kaazi Sailing Club took full advantage winning the day’s races before Dick Stockley took over.

The sailors will pray that the ‘fuel’ is available in today’s event as they try to catch up with the leading pack.

Saliors from Kaazi are expected to prevail over their Entebbe counterparts because of the regular training they do every weekend.
